Pseuderanthemum alatum, commonly known as the Chocolate Plant, is a low-growing, tropical perennial with distinctive coppery-brown to chocolate-colored leaves that have silver patches. It produces small, purple flowers in racemes, often appearing in late spring or summer, and can reach a height of about 12-18 inches. While named for its foliage color, it is not related to edible chocolate.
Care and Cultivation:
Light:
Prefers mostly shade to full shade. While it needs bright light, direct sunlight should be avoided, especially for potted plants.
Watering:
Water regularly, allowing the top inch or two of soil to dry out between waterings, but avoid overwatering which can lead to root rot.
Soil:
Thrives in moist, well-drained soil, but can tolerate some drier conditions.
Hardiness:
Considered hardy to USDA Zones 9-11. In cooler climates, it can be grown in pots and brought indoors during winter.
Toxicity:
Pseuderanthemum alatum is toxic if ingested and is not recommended for homes with children or pets.
Propagation:
Can be propagated from cuttings or seeds.
